While this week began with the completion of our light boxes and first Design Thinking exam, the studio traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to conclude the work week with sketching and visiting sites that we had been learning about for the past few weeks. It was an incredible experience, putting real places to historical and design context, rather than just pictures of the places. I found it was rather difficult for me to focus on my sketching at many of the places we visited, because I wanted to be in the moment in the place appreciating its parts and whole - I wish we had a little longer to be able to comfortably take in both ways of experiencing the space. The upside of our tight schedule was that we got to see pretty much everything there was to see in a matter of a few days, allowing us to leave satisfied with the variety of knowledge that we were able to soak in. It was incredibly insightful to be able to have previous historical context upon entering each space, but even more so because of the brief, deeper connections that Professor Goodstein provided us with at each of our stops. We were able to visit firms, see monuments, visit art museums, and get a taste of the St. Louis scene, giving us modern context while experiencing the way the history of the place is a part of the city as a whole.
